The Surabaya City and Socio-Cultural Challenges in implementing the Green City Concept
The city of Surabaya is approaching as an ideal city that is livable. The ideal condition of a city is not only a matter of public health and environmental cleanliness, but also how to create an ideal environment to live in. City development must refer to the green city concept. In this case, there is a green concept which means referring to the interconnectedness of natural features in the city through urban planning and design, and the possibility of using green measures as an engine of economic growth. Combining environment and economic development is not easy. There are challenges and socio-cultural problems in it. However, what has been done by the Surabaya City Government really needs to be appreciated. All stakeholders play significant role in the development of this city.

Surabaya has 570 parks spread throughout the city. Surabaya is comfortable as a place to live and this is inseparable from the strategy in structuring development that is oriented towards sustainable development goals. City development that pays attention to ecological aspects so that development priorities emphasize the provision of green open spaces. This has a negative impact on the city and residents. The benefits of green open space are not only to beautify the city, but can also be used to reduce air pollution and global warming. Green open space can also be used by the community to relax and can be used as a learning location.
Applying development based on the green city concept, the Surabaya city government has begun to build (and rebuild) various green open spaces in Surabaya. Various plants (trees and flowers) are planted in public places, not only in parks but also along roads in Surabaya. This is the main attraction for the city of Surabaya. In addition, with the increasing number of parks in the city of Surabaya, the city which has always been dubbed the City of Heroes has been nicknamed the City of a Thousand Parks.
